Notes:
I recently had to replace the hard drive on my 3rd generation iPod. I found it hard to find hard drive compatibility information in the same place so thought I'd open up the question to the web and see if people can help me.

The 5th Generation iPods support drives up to 100GB using the ZIF adapter. The Toshiba, Samsung and Seagate drives all use the same drive cable. Hitachi drives require a special cable. You cannot replace a Hitachi drive in an iPod with a Toshiba, Seagate or Samsung, and you can't replace a Toshiba, Samsung or Seagate with a Hitachi without changing the cable too.
The nice thing about the 5th Gen iPods is they automatically partition and format the drives on installation. Previous generations - the drives must be pre-formatted.
Hi Mark,
Is this really true? I bought this new toshiba hd and my old one is hitachi, it canĀ“t be replaced without replancing the cable? and the cable comes out easily?
Thanks
